Semantic I/O is a method of abstraction at the protocol level. The goal is to offer a universal medium that any computing device could use to talk to any other device.

Because hardware resources are becoming more limited with the emergence of mobile and IoT, traditional layers of abstraction such as OS System call APIs and web service APIs are no longer adequate solutions.

Using an application layer protocol being developed called SIOP (Semantic I/O Protocol) computing devices can abstract on pure intent of the interaction. This abstraction requires no appreciable additional computational power. It will allow us to reintroduce the separation of hardware and software on small computing devices without the need for an operating system or other resource intensive methods of abstraction.
